Summer Company brings business boom to Simcoe CountySummer Company brings business boom to Simcoe CountySummer Company brings business boom to Simcoe County

A fresh group of entrepreneurs is pounding the pavement in Barrie. Thanks to the annual Summer Company program, approximately 50 students throughout Simcoe County are launching their careers as entrepreneurs. "All participants receive business training, mentorships from the local business community and they get a grant up to $3,000 to run their business over the summer," Barrie's director of business development Stephannie Schlichter said.

Tiny Township's Shelby-Lynn Dunbar is one of them, offering a natural skin care line called Mother Nature Skincare. "I've suffered from acne since Grade 9 and I've tried to find better products (for my face)," she said. "Even some of the 'natural' products you can find have chemicals in them.
" So, she started working on her own recipes. "I tried to find the best natural products out rest there, but it has been hard," she said. "I wanted awesome products and spent time finding out the best ingredients for each product.
" It took a few months to develop her line, which includes cleansing oils and makeup removers. The bottles were a breeze to order and labels just arrived from Montreal to finish off the look. "Everything I've sourced is in Canada. The bottles were from B.C., the ingredients are in Ontario." And Shelby-Lynn has already been getting her name out there, showing the products in places like the Midland Farmers' Market.
She has also developed a Facebook page and the website should be completed by the end of July. Former Summer Company participant Alyssa Labrecque now runs Soul Food Nutritionista as a holistic nutritionist. Almost a decade ago, she joined the program as a painter.
"I started Brush and Roll as an interior and exterior painter. I needed to pay for university and experience growth of my business with support, which was invaluable," she said. Within four months, she earned $20,000 and became known as the singing painter, as she's a trained opera singer.
Her words of wisdom were to file every receipt and to cherish the skills earned. "Stay humble and continue to learn," she said. "Tap into the resources available. Grab business cards and take people out for coffee.
